Dots arrive from the factory fully assembled, but in a sleep state. You will not see them in the Geocene app until you wake them up.

  1. Make sure you have an Android or iOS device with the Geocene app installed. Detailed instructions can be found here:

    Install the Mobile App

  2. Squeeze the middle of the logo on the Dot to press the hidden button. Hold it down until you hear a sequence of beeps (approximately three seconds).

  3. Open the Geocene mobile app. Your Dot should appear on the list of devices with a green dot next to its name and a gray badge that reads “Idle.” The name will look like “Dot-1234”. It is also printed on the label on the back of the device. The name you see on the screen should match the name on the label.

  1. Press the “Start” button to start a “mission.” “Mission” is Geocene’s term for a specific deployment of a device. For example, to record temperatures on a particular stove in a particular household, or to test the device in your office. Whenever you want to use the Dot for a different purpose, you should stop the current mission and start a new one. After confirming you are ready to start a mission, you will see the Mission Settings dialog.

By default, the Dot will record the temperature every five minutes. You can change this by selecting a different sample interval from the dropdowns. If you are a member of multiple organizations, a dropdown will appear asking you to select the organization you want this mission to belong to. You can also add tags or notes. These will be visible both in the mobile app and the Geocene web app.

  2. When you are done changing the mission settings, tap the “Start Mission” button at the bottom.
