If you see a device in this state, it means that there is something wrong with the thermocouple (temperature probe) or with the wire connecting it to the Dot or simpleSUM.
First check the connection to see if the wire was pulled loose from the terminal block inside the case.
Start by following the instructions to open the case:
Inside the case, you will see a gray terminal block. This holds the two wires coming from the thermocouple, an red wire and a white wire.
Hold down the two buttons with one hand to release the wires. Gently pull the wires away from the terminal block with the other hand until they slide out of the terminal block completely.
Position the wires in the openings in the terminal block. Take care to ensure the red wire goes in the side labeled “+” and the white wire goes in the side labeled “–”.
Hold down the buttons on the terminal block and slide the wires fully into the openings. Once the wires are fully inserted, release the buttons.
Gently tug on the wires to ensure they are secure in the terminal block.
Open the app and look for the simpleSUM again. The badge should now be green and say “Running”. If so, close the case.
If you still see a red “Error” badge, the thermocouple may be broken. If you have a spare thermocouple, you can replace it. See:
